Abstract
Addresses the issues of migration and resettlement and the process of adaptation which Indian indentured migrants faced in Trinidad from 1914-1947. Discusses the gender negotiations practiced by female and male descendants of indentured migrants in the first half of the 20th century. Suggests that each wanted to preserve some aspects of the gender system brought from India between 1845 and 1917, in order to consolidate ethnic identity and continuity in the new society. Presents the challenges of the new community and the opportunities afforded women and men to confront the more restricting aspects of Indian patriarchy.....
