Abstract
Traces the development of reggae in the Spanish (circum)-Caribbean. Shows how imitation of the original music and lyrics leads to transpositions and repositioning as the cultural messages adjust and accomodate to the receiving societies. Argues that what emerges is a shift toward Eurocentric aesthetic images and reduction in the tone of violence and confrontaiton. Examines gender attitudes and concludes that while privileging of the male and subordination of the female dominate, there is greater openness to concepts of family.....
