Abstract
Addresses key issues related to the purpose of lifelong learning in the Caribbean context; traditional and emergent technologies in use; research issues and community involvement. Documents ways in which the university addresses the adult learning needs of groups that include the excluded and deprived as well as the use of upwardly mobile professional. The authors note that although the tertiary education sector and NGO’s have been meeting adult education needs, much remains to be done in having university personnel engage with community members to address, in culturally relevant ways critical issues such as: economic diversification, environmental preservation and HIV/AIDS. Reveals that Caribbean university academics are actively reflecting on and engaged in issues of adult education raised at CONFINTEA; at meetings of the working group on adult education in institutions of higher learning as expressed in the Mumbai Statement, and at the UNESCO Higher Education Conference, in October 1998.....
