Abstract
Studies the changing fortunes of Poor Relief, which was instituted in Jamaica in 1886 and is managed by the local authorities. Posits that even though a number of public inquries have been conducted into the conditions in which poor people live and into the management of poor relief ,management of the policy has not kept abreast of developments in modern management. Argues that poor relief has been surpassed by other politically visable modern programmes of poverty reduction and that a general deterioration in economic fortunes of the country has had a negative impact on the supply and real value of public investments in poor relief.
