Abstract
Explains the significance of the guilds within the metropolitan and more widely diffused constructions of Londoners' civic identity and examines one of the widespread misapprehensions of these companies. Analyses the story of Richard Whittington, its recasting by seventeenth-century authors, and the ways in which it dealt with many of the barriers that faced everyday migrants.
