Characteristics of Abused Children and Adolescents Attending a Specialised Clinic [Abstract]

Objective: To examine socio-demographic characteristics of children and adolescents presenting to a specialised clinic for the treatment of abuse. Method: The records of a specialised clinic in Montego Bay were reviewed for the period 2000-2004. Diagnoses and socio-demographic factors were extracted and analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for windows version 11.5. Conclusion: The majority of cases reporting to the clinic were for sexual abuse. The reporting of physical abuse and neglect was low. While sexual abuse of children is of major concern, physical and emotional abuse were also important problems that were also not being addressed by health services.
