Low Bone Mineral Density in an Afro-Caribbean Jamaican Population and the Associated Risk Factors [Abstract]

Objective: To describe the prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD) in a group of post-menopausal black Jamaican women and associated risk factors. Method: Cross-sectional study was carried out on 171 postmenopausal women, recruited from the gynaecology outpatient clinics, University Hospital staff, church groups and from the community. Questionnaires, including general demographic information (age, parity, occupation), and questions about lifestyle behaviours (exercise, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking), were completed. Measurement included participants' weight and height (for calculation of body mass index), blood pressure, fasting blood glucose and cholesteral levels. Bone mineral densities were measured using the Achilles express®, an ultrasometer that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to evaluate bone status in the heel.
