Abstract
The research results reported here are from a larger study that looked at the perceptions of principals, teachers and librarians of the role of a school librarian. The research question was: What do principals perceive to be the role of a school librarian? The major finding was that there was stronger agreement about a librarian's traditional management and curricular support functions with progressively lower ratings for items that implied greater curricular involvement. Principals thought that providing leadership in the development of the school library programme was the most important function of a school librarian. Teaching students how to use library resources and equipment was viewed as a school librarian's primary curricular function.
