Abstract
Thongs is thus asardonic retort toSandals, the leading‘all-inclusive’ chainof hotels in Jamaica,as May Day is areference to May 1, International Workers’ Day or Labour Dayas it’s called in some places. The tongue-in-cheek title alsoreferences the emergency code word used internationallyas a distress signal – May Day – in turn derived from theFrench phrase venezm’aider , meaning ‘come help me’, acall that Chung has admirably responded to. By deployinghumour, Chung renders a painful subject matter accessibleand approachable, gently redirecting our attention to theways in which slavery and enslavement persist into thepresent.
