Abstract
This paper examines the topic using largely secondary data collected about the nurses in this region. They are among the most mobile professionals in the world, for reasons which will be explored in the paper. From Mary Seacole to my own family members and high school mates who migrated to the USA and to Canada there are important narratives, which put the choice to migrate in context in a culture within which migration is an integral part. Not only are there the gendered nuances of female nurse migration but also there are implications for families, implications for health services and lessons for human resource management in other sectors. The paper also explores how our societies might consider how we manage migration and the extent to which talent will be lost to the region and its future development, if we fail to address the fundamental issues.
